Wonderful WorlD Of Reading
Reading in our year one classrooms is enjoyed everyday by all students through literacy workshops. Reading is one the most important focus areas of St Bernardine’s classroom teaching. The students then celebrate their reading achievements by showing their skills at home when reading their home readers.
Your child will see the importance of reading when he or she watches you and other family members read. So share your enthusiasm for your favourite book and have reading materials of all types in your home to provide an invitation to read. Let trips to the library become a favourite family outing. Give your child books as presents, and capitalize on your child's interests by finding books and articles that he/she will enjoy. You can read aloud at bedtime with the whole family. Have a stash of books in the car for children to read aloud. Read to guests that come and visit. You could even ask them to bring a book to share. I always encourage families with older siblings to read aloud with their brother or sister. It’s truly amazing to see the impact this has on our Year Ones. Encourage your child to read with you shopping lists, cereal boxes, instructions, recipes etc,
. . . . . . and remember reading for kids should be seen as fun, not a chore. Reading opens a world of fantasy and adventure.
NOTE: Pre and post discussions around books are vital in developing your child's comprehension skills and confidence. Below are a few helpful resources to use at home.
